1.2 Conventions Used in This Guide

In this guide, the phrases “press right,” “press left”, “press up,” and “press down” refer to pressing the Navigation key right, left, up, or down. For example, “Press up three times then press OK” means press the top edge of the Navigation key three times, then press the OK key once.

2 Quick Start

The Kyocera 5135 phone has a standard phone keypad plus five function keys for turning the phone on and off, making and ending calls, and navigating through menus.

On the top right edge of the phone is the antenna. Pull this antenna out to make a call.

Function keys are located below the phone screen and above the numeric keypad.

There is a large, round Navigation key that is indented in the center. Surrounding the Navigation key are four function keys. At the top left of the Navigation key is the OK key. Top right is the Clear key. Bottom Left is the Send key and bottom right is the End key.

The Navigation key is the large, round key in the middle. It sits just below the flip. The Navigation key functions in much the same way as the arrow keys on a computer keyboard for moving up, down, left, and right through the phone’s menus. To move up, press the top edge of the Navigation key. To press left, press the left edge of the key, and so on. Each time you press the Navigation key in any direction, it beeps in the same pitch.

The OK key is a small square key located at the upper left side of the Navigation key. It makes a high-pitched beep when pressed.

The Clear key is a small square key, the same size as the OK key, located at the upper right side of the Navigation key. It has a lower-pitched beep than the OK key. Both the Clear key and Navigation keys beep in the same pitch.

The Send key is a larger square key, located at the bottom left side of the Navigation key. It emits a short, high tone each time you press it.

The End key is a larger square key, the same size as the Send key, located at the bottom right side of the Navigation key. Both the Send and End keys beep in the same pitch, higher than the Navigation and Clear keys.

The next four rows of keys comprise a standard phone keypad. These number keys make conventional DTMF tones. There is a small bump or nib in the center of the 5 key.

There is a rectangular jack on the bottom edge of the phone. This jack is for the AC adapter charger included with the phone.

2.1 Turn On the Phone

Open the flip, and press the End key. A short, high beep sounds when the power is on. This takes about 5 to 7 seconds. When the phone is on, the keys make DTMF tones when pressed.

2.2 Turn Off the Phone

Press and hold the End key for approximately 5 seconds. When you first press the key, you will hear a beep. Do not release the key until a short, high-pitched beep sounds.

2.3 Make a Call

Your phone must be turned on before you can use it. When the phone is off, incoming calls go to voicemail.

1. Open the flip.

2. Fully extend the antenna.

2. Briefly press the End key to make sure the phone is in standby mode (idle state). A DTMF tone will sound.

3. Enter the phone number using the keypad.

4. Press the Send key. It will take a few seconds for the call to connect and for you to hear either ringing or a busy signal.

2.4 Answer a Call

When the phone rings, open the Flip and press the Send key to answer.

You can set the phone to answer in two ways: 1. Answer automatically when you open the Flip, or 2. Continue ringing until you press the Send key.

To change the setting:

1. Briefly press the End key to make sure the phone is in standby mode.

2. Press OK once.

3. Press the Navigation key right three times then press OK once to select the Settings menu.

4. Press down six times, then press OK to select Extras.

5. Press down three times, then press OK to select Answer with Flip.

- Press OK to select Disabled. The phone will ring until you press the Send key to answer, –or-

- Press down once then press OK to select Enabled. Enabled causes the phone to answer when you open the flip. Note that you will not be able to silence the ringer at the time you receive a call.

2.5 End a Call

Briefly press the End key. It will beep once.

Note: Make sure you press the End key briefly. The phone will turn off if you press and hold down the End key.

2.6 Set Up Voicemail

Before you can record voicemail messages, you must set up a password and record a personal greeting. When you have set up your voicemail, all unanswered calls to your phone are automatically transferred to voicemail, even if your phone is in use or turned off.

To Set Up Voicemail:

1. Obtain your passcode from your service provider.

2. Briefly press the End key to make sure the phone is in standby mode.

3. Press and hold the 1 key for about two seconds. The number 1 should speed dial your service provider’s voicemail access number.

4. When you hear a recording on the other end, press the # key (fourth row, last key on the right).

5. Follow the system prompts to create a password and record a greeting.

Note: If you are having trouble setting up your voicemail, contact your service provider for assistance.

2.7 Check Voicemail Messages

1. Briefly press the End key to make sure the phone is in standby mode.

2. Press and hold the 1 key. This key speed dials your service provider’s voicemail access number.

3. Follow the system prompts.

To set your phone to alert you when you have voicemail messages, refer to section 5.9.2 Set a Voice Message Beep Alert.

Note: If you are having trouble checking your voicemail messages, contact your service provider for assistance.

2.8 Accessible Settings

We recommend that your phone be set to the following three settings for accessibility.

1. Set the Main Menu View to the Large Icons setting. Instructions are in section 3.6.2 Change the Menu Display Setting.

2. Make sure Silence All mode is turned OFF. Instructions are in section 5.1.7 Vibrate and Silence the Ringer, Alerts, and Keys.

3. Set a shortcut to the Ringer Volume setting. Instructions are in section 5.1.2 Set a Shortcut to the Ringer Volume Option.

3 Getting to Know Your Phone

This section describes the features and use of your phone in detail.

3.1 Phone Features and Specifications

Trimode: This phone operates in three modes, to keep you connected virtually anywhere. The modes are CDMA digital service at 800 and 1900 megahertz, and analog service at 800 megahertz. CDMA stands for Code Division Multiple Access, the standard for digital communications developed by QUALCOMM Incorporated.

Features: Phone features include vibration alert; audible alerts for missed calls, voicemail, roaming, and loss or gain of service; 15 standard ringer tones and songs including separate ringers for business and personal callers; alarm clock; calculator; stopwatch; countdown timer; and two-way short messaging service for sending and receiving text messages.

3.2 Safe Operating Instructions

Read these cautions before you use the phone.

If you have a pacemaker, keep the phone at least 6 inches (15 centimeters) away from your chest. If your phone is too close to a pacemaker, its radio frequency (RF) energy may interfere with the pacemaker. If you have any reason to suspect a problem, turn off your phone immediately. See the Appendix of this document for more information about RF energy.

Only use Kyocera-approved accessories with Kyocera phones. Use of any unauthorized accessories may be dangerous and will invalidate the phone warranty if the accessories cause damage to the phone. To order accessories, contact your service provider or contact the Kyocera Wireless Corp. Accessory Store by phone at 800 349 4188 or 858 882 1410 or online at www.kyocera-wireless.com.

3.3 Icons on the Screen

For your information, we will describe the icons that appear on the phone’s five-line screen (from left to right).

The D (Digital Mode) icon means the phone is operating in CDMA digital mode. There is no sound associated with this icon.

The Signal Strength icon (an antenna with up to four vertical lines) indicates the current signal strength. The more vertical lines that appear, the stronger the signal. When the Signal Strength icon is on the screen, you can make and receive calls. There is no sound associated with this icon.

The No Signal icon (a phone with a line through it) means that your phone is not receiving a signal from the system. You cannot make or receive calls. Wait a little longer or move to a different location. You can set an audible alert to notify you when you move in or out of the service area. Refer to 5.4.3 and 5.4.4, Roaming Alert and Loss or Gain of Service Alert, respectively.

The On Call icon (a phone) means that a call is in progress.

The Bell icon indicates that the alarm clock has been set.

The Silence icon (a bell with a line through it) indicates that the phone ringer has been silenced and the phone will vibrate or light up instead of ringing.

The R (Roaming) icon means the phone is outside of its home area. You can set an alert that tells the phone to beep if you move in or out of your service area. Refer to 5.4.3 and 5.4.4, Roaming Alert and Loss or Gain of Service Alert, respectively. When the alert is turned on, a two-tone beep sounds each time you enter or exit your home area. The beep when you exit goes from a higher tone to a lower tone, and the beep when you reenter goes from the lower tone to the higher tone.

The Envelope icon means that you have received a text message, voicemail, or page. When this icon first appears, your phone will beep four times. If you have the message alert turned on, you will also hear a single reminder beep every five minutes. To set the message alert, refer to section 5.9.2 Set a Voice Message Beep Alert.

The Padlock icon means that your phone is operating with enhanced CDMA voice privacy (if available from your service provider).

The Battery Charge icon (a battery with diagonal black bars) shows how much power remains in the battery. The more black bars there are, the greater the charge. When your battery charge is very low, the phone beeps, the icon on screen blinks, and a text message on the screen warns you about the low battery level.

The Up Arrow icon is a direction to press the Navigation key up.

The Down Arrow icon is a direction to press the Navigation key down.
(first row, second key).

3.4 Physical Features of Your Phone

Hold the phone with the keypad facing you and notice the following features.

3.4.1 Antenna

The antenna is on the top edge of the phone. Always extend the antenna while making or receiving a call for the best reception.

3.4.2 Headset Jack

The jack for a headset is located on the top edge of the phone.

3.4.3 Charging Jacks

The jack for the data cable and AC adapter charger is located on the bottom edge of the phone. The rectangular jack on the bottom of the phone is the connection port for the data cable (sold separately) and the AC adapter that came with your phone.

3.4.4 Earpiece

The earpiece is at the top of the Flip above the screen. It consists of a raised oval with a hole on the right side.

3.4.5 Microphone

The microphone is located just below the last row of keys directly in the middle of the phone. It is a very small hole in the faceplate.

3.4.6 Keypad

Below the screen is the keypad. The first five keys are the function keys followed by three keys in each of the four remaining rows.

The use of these keys is described here, followed by a quick reference to keys, by name.

3.4.7 Keys

The first five keys located directly below the screen are the function keys. There is a large, round Navigation key in the center. Surrounding the Navigation key are four square keys. Located at the top left of the Navigation key is the OK key. Top right is the Clear key. Bottom Left is the Send key and bottom right is the End key. The Send key and the End key are slightly larger in size than the OK key and Clear key.

OK key - Press OK to select menu items and options that have been highlighted. It beeps when you press it.

Navigation key – Press the Navigation key up, down, left, and right to move forward and backward through most menus and to increase or decrease volume settings. It emits a short, lower tone when you press it up, down, left, and right. If it emits a repeating, high-pitched beep, you have reached the end of a list or menu and cannot move further in the direction you have pressed.

Clear key – – Press the Clear key to go back up through menu options one option at a time. You will hear a beep each time you go back an option. Press and hold the Clear key to return to standby mode. It will beep twice, one low pitch beep and then one short higher pitched beep.

Also use the Clear key like a backspace key on a computer: Press it once to erase the last key you pressed or press and hold it to erase all the characters you just entered or dialed. When you press and hold it, the phone will make one low beep, then one high beep. After the second beep, all characters have been erased.

Send key - The Send key emits a short high tone each time you press it. Press the Send key to start a call or answer a call. Press it twice to redial the last number you dialed.

End key - The End key is used to end a call, to exit a menu or option and return to standby mode, or to turn the phone on and off. This key also emits a short high tone.

Press and hold the End key for approximately five seconds to turn the phone on or off. When the phone powers on, a short high beep sounds or the phone vibrates, depending on the ringer setting. Release the key after the beep or vibration. The phone is ready to use.

When the phone powers off, a short beep sounds when you first press the key. Hold the key down several seconds until you hear a high beep indicating that the phone has powered off.

Briefly press the End key to end a call or exit the current menu or option and return to standby mode.

The four remaining rows comprise oval keys in the standard numeric telephone layout. There is a small bump or “nib” in the center of the 5 key. The tones associated with these keys are similar to a regular telephone keypad. If the keys don’t make sounds when you press them, the phone power may be off, the Silence All sounds setting may be on, or the Key Beeps setting may be turned off. For troubleshooting help, refer to section 10.1 If the Phone Is Not Making Sound When You Press the Keys.

The star key, the first key in the last row, functions as a Shift key. It is used to change letter case from lower case to capitals while entering text in a text message or contact name.

The pound key, the third key in the last row, functions as the Space key. This key is used to add a space while entering text.

Press the 0 key to dial a zero or to reach the operator. The 0 key is also used to cycle through word choices that appear on the screen while entering text using the T9 Text Input (rapid text entry) mode.

3.5 Battery

Your phone comes with a standard external lithium ion (LiIon) battery. The battery is partially charged when you receive the phone.

3.5.1 Battery Specifications

Battery types: Standard LiIon battery (included) and extended LiIon battery (not included).

CDMA talk time: Up to 3 hours with standard LiIon battery.

CDMA standby time: Up to 4.5 days with standard LiIon battery.

Times will vary based on user settings, feature use, and network configuration. Battery drain is greater when the phone is roaming in analog mode.

Before using your phone, fully charge the battery. When you first receive the phone, we recommend you charge it overnight.

You can safely recharge the battery at any time, even if it has a partial charge.

3.5.2 Insert the Battery

1. With the flip closed, hold the phone face-down in your hand with the battery casing facing you. There are two protruding metal contacts at the bottom ledge of the casing.

2. Hold the battery. There are two flat metal contacts on a ressessed surface at the botom of the battery.

3. Place the bottom of the battery into the bottom ledge of the phone casing.

4. Press the top of the battery into the casing until it snaps into place.

3.5.3 Remove the Battery

1. Press and hold the End key for a few seconds to power off the phone. You will hear an immediate beep. When you hear a second, higher beep, the phone is off.

2. Close the flip and hold the phone face-down in your hand. On the back of the phone is a battery release button. Push it up and toward the top of the phone. The back cover will pop open. Grasp the sides of the battery and pull it away from the phone.

3.5.4 Charge the Battery

Connect the travel charger that came with your phone to the rectangular jack located on the bottom edge of the phone. Press until it snaps into place. Then connect the adapter plug to a wall outlet.

To charge the battery more quickly, turn off the phone while charging it.

3.5.5 Battery Power Levels

The battery must have at least a partial charge before you can make or receive calls, even if it’s connected to the travel charger.

The battery charge is indicated by a battery icon on the phone screen. When the battery is fully charged, the icon is filled with black bars and the message “Charging is complete” appears on the screen. No sound is associated with this message.

When the battery is very low, the icon blinks on the screen, and a text message appears on the screen warning about the low battery level.

When the battery is drained, the phone beeps several times and shuts off immediately.

You can extend battery life by turning off backlighting. Backlighting causes the screen and perimeter of the keys to light up when a key is pressed.

3.5.6 Turn Off Backlighting to Save Battery Charge

To turn off backlighting, take these steps.

1. To make sure the phone is in standby mode (idle state), press once briefly on the End key.

2. Press OK once. The phone beeps once.

3. Press right three times, then press OK once to select the Settings menu.

4. Press down two times, then press OK to select the Display menu.

5. Press OK to select the Backlighting menu.

6. Press OK again to select the first item in the list, “Disabled.”

7. Briefly press the End key once to return to standby mode.

3.5.7 Battery Care

Follow these guidelines to improve battery performance.

- Do not disassemble, puncture, or short-circuit the battery.
- Keep the metal contacts of the battery clean.
- If you have not used a battery for more than a month, recharge it before using your phone.
- Avoid extreme temperatures, direct sunlight, and high humidity.
- Never dispose of any battery in or near a fire. It could explode.

3.6 Navigating Through Menus

Important: The way your display settings are set up affects which direction you must press the Navigation key to select menu items. We suggest you read this section before proceeding through the manual.

Your Kyocera 5135 phone has an extensive menu structure. Most of these menus must be accessed using the Navigation key. The top-level menus are the main sections of the phone software. They are called:

Contacts
Messages
Recent Calls
Settings
Tools
Phone Info
Web Browser

Most top-level menus contain submenus, some of which contain more lists and menus. For a list of all of the phone’s menu options, refer to section 9 Menus.

3.6.1 Top-Level Menu Navigation

To access the top-level menus, briefly press the End key to make sure you are in standby mode, then press OK once. The top-level menus are now active; when you press the Navigation key up, down, left, or right, you will be moving through or selecting menus. Which direction you need to press to access menus depends on the menu display setting of your phone.

Your phone has three menu display settings: Large Icons, Small Icons, and List Menus. These settings determine how you navigate between the top-level menus and how they are presented on the screen. (Procedures in this book are written assuming your phone is set to the Large Icons or Small Icons setting.) These settings are described here.

Large Icons and Small Icons Settings:

This section describes how to navigate through the phone’s menus when your phone is set to the Large Icons setting or the Small Icons setting. The steps for navigating through menus are the same for both the Large Icons setting and the Small Icons setting; however, we recommend the Large Icons setting because the risk for error is smaller.

Using either icons setting, you access menus in much the same way as you do in a Microsoft Windows application: You press the Navigation key to the right or left to access the top-level menus; then you press it down or up to access submenus.

Using either icon setting, you press OK once to select Menu. The key beeps. You are then at the first option in the list of top-level menus. This menu option is called Contacts.

To move to the next top-level menu (Messages), press the right portion of the Navigation key briefly once. The phone will beep once. Repeat to go to the next menu. If you press and hold instead of pressing briefly, the phone will beep once, but you will move rapidly through multiple menus without hearing subsequent beeps.

To back up to the previous menu, press the Navigation key left briefly once. Repeat to back up to the menu before that one.

As you press the Navigation key left or right, the top-level menus loop continuously. That is, when you reach the end of the list, the phone starts again at the first menu. To find the beginning of the list of top-level menus, briefly press the End key once to exit. You will hear a high-pitched beep. Then Press OK to select Menu. It will beep once. You are now at the first top-level menu (Contacts) again.

List Menus Setting:

This section describes how to navigate through menus when your phone is set to the List Menus setting. (Note: Directions in this user’s guide are written assuming your phone is set to the large Icons or Small Icons setting, not the List Menus setting.)

Using the List Menus setting, you press OK once to select Menu. The phone beeps once. You are then at the first option in the list of top-level menus. This option is called Contacts.

3.8 Identifying the Mode the Phone Is In

3.8.1 Standby Mode

When the phone is turned on but is not being used, it is usually in standby mode (its idle state). In this mode, the keys work and make sounds. From standby mode, you can dial a phone number, save a number in the phone book, or access a number that has been saved in the phone book. Briefly press the End key at any time to return to standby mode. Important: If you press the End key while on a call, you will end the call.

When the phone is turned on, it will switch to power-save mode if it fails to locate a signal after several attempts. The words “Power Save Mode” and an icon of a phone with a line through it appear on the screen.

When the phone is in power-save mode, you cannot make or receive calls. When you press any key, the phone beeps and returns to standby mode. We recommend you briefly press the End key to make sure the phone is in standby mode.

4 Making and Answering Calls

Your phone must be turned on before you can use it. When the phone is off, incoming calls go to voicemail. This section describes how to make and answer calls; how to make calls after dialing 911; how to mute the phone; and how to use special calling features from your service provider, such as call waiting and three-way calling. Note: For information on entering speed dial numbers, refer to section 6.2 Saving a New Contact.

With the call waiting feature, when you are on a call and another call comes in, you hear two beeps. To ignore the call and send the caller to voice mail, ignore the beeps. To answer the call, take these steps.

1. Press the Send key to switch to the incoming call. The previous caller is placed on hold.

2. Press the Send key again to change from one caller to the other. If you press the End key, both calls are disconnected.

4.1.5 Calling 911

You can call an emergency number such as 911 even if your phone is locked or your access is restricted.

4.1.6 Making and Receiving Calls After Calling 911

Any time you make a 911 call, your phone goes into emergency mode. This enables the emergency service exclusive access to your phone so they can call you back if necessary. To make or receive regular calls after dialing 911, you must exit emergency mode as follows.

When you have completed the 911 call, press the OK key twice (first row, first key). The phone returns to standby mode and you are ready to make and receive calls.

4.1.7 Mute a Call

During a call, if you want to set the phone so that the other party does not hear your voice, press OK.

To turn off the mute feature, press OK again.

4.1.8 Use Three-Way Calling

Three-way calling allows three parties to participate in the same phone conversation. Your Kyocera Wireless phone supports three-way calling if it has been activated by your service provider. Contact your service provider for details.

2. When the first party answers the phone, press the Send key to put them on hold.

It includes numbers you may have dialed but hung up before anyone answered, and numbers of callers who made a connection with your phone but did not leave a voice mail message.

The most recent call is listed first. You can select and call any of the numbers in this list, with the exception of calls from phone numbers that have caller ID blocking from the phone company. Calls from blocked phone numbers will be included in the list, but the phone does not recognize the numbers, so they cannot be called back.

To call a number in the Recent Calls list, take these steps.

1 From standby mode, press OK.

2. Press right twice, then press OK once to select the Recent Calls menu. The phone number of the most recent incoming or outgoing call is highlighted. To locate a less recent number, press down, once for each number. (For example, to highlight the third-most-recent phone number, press down twice.) When you reach the end of the list, the phone emits a short, high beep.

3. To call the highlighted number, press the Send key.

4.3 Speed Dialing and 1-Touch Dialing

1. From the home screen, dial the 1-digit or 2-digit speed dial location.

2. Press the Send key.

We recommend you use the 1-Touch Dialing feature to save a step when speed dialing.

4.3.1 Use 1-Touch Dialing to Speed Dial a Number

Once a phone number has been entered in the Contacts directory, a speed dial location has been assigned to it, and the 1-Touch Dialing option has been activated on your phone, you can use this feature.

>From the home screen, press and hold the assigned speed dialing location for the phone number. For example, if the speed dialing location is 3, press and hold 3, but if the speed dialing location is 13, press 1 briefly, then press and hold 3. The phone will dial the contact and you should hear the ringing or busy signal in a few seconds.

4.3.2 Troubleshooting Speed Dialing and 1-Touch Dialing

If nothing happens when you either enter a speed dial location and press Send or you press and hold a speed dial number after 1-Touch Dialing has been enabled, the phone may have lost service or you may have dialed a speed dialing location that had not been assigned. (If this is the case, a message will appear on the screen. There is no audible signal.)

1. When the phone rings, briefly press the End key once to silence the ringer for only this call.

5.9 Dealing with Missed Calls

You may miss a phone call because your phone was turned off, your ringer was turned off, you silenced an incoming call, or your phone was not receiving a signal when the call arrived.

In most cases, when a call is missed, a missed call alert appears on the screen and you must briefly press the End key to clear it. Because you may not know if your phone’s missed call alert feature is turned on, we recommend that you always briefly press the End key once to make sure any messages are cleared and your phone is in standby mode before you make a call or perform any functions on the phone.

6 Phone Book: Storing Contacts

The phone’s Contacts directory stores names and phone numbers. In order to set up a speed dial location for a phone number, you must save the phone number in the Contacts directory. While you are saving the phone number, you can classify it as business or personal in case you choose to set the phone to ring differently to identify calls from business or personal contacts.

Note: While it is possible to save more than one phone number, in addition to a pager number or email address in a single contact, we recommend that you save each phone number or pager number as a single contact, in order to look up the phone numbers more easily. This guide gives directions for saving contacts in the most accessible way: One phone number per contact, with a numeric name and a classification of business or personal.

6.1 Saving a Number in the Recent Calls List as a Contact

This method allows you to save the phone number of someone who called you without actually entering the numbers yourself. The phone stores phone numbers in the Recent Calls list, as long as the caller does not have a phone number that is blocked or restricted by the phone company.

1. Briefly press the End key to make sure the phone is in standby mode.

2. Press OK.

3. Press right twice then press OK once to select the Recent Calls menu. The phone number of the most recent incoming or outgoing call is highlighted. Incoming and outgoing calls are all listed together, with the most recent call first.

4. To select the most recent number, press OK. To select the number before that one, press down once, then press OK.

5. Press right twice, then press OK to select the Save New option.
The Enter Name screen will appear. Note: If the number you have selected has already been saved in your Contacts directory, the Save New option will not be available and you will have selected the View Contact option. If the caller’s number has been blocked or restricted by the phone company, the phone will be at the Call Time/Date screen and pressing right will have no effect. These screens can only be confirmed visually.

5. To finish saving this contact, proceed to step 4 of the next section, 6.2 Saving a New Contact.

6.2 Saving a New Contact

1. Briefly press the End key to make sure the phone is in standby mode.

2. Using the numeric keypad, enter the phone number you want to save, including the area code. You do not need to enter a number 1 before the area code, but be sure to include the area code so that the phone number will be dialed correctly when you are roaming.

Note: If you want to erase the last character you entered, press the Clear key once per character. If you want to clear all the numbers you entered, briefly press the End key. If you press the End key, you will return to standby mode and you will need to start again at step 1.

3. Press OK to select the Save New option. The OK key beeps.

4. You are now at the Enter Name screen.

Note: If the phone number you have entered has already been saved in your Contacts directory, the message “Number is saved already. Save again?” appears on the screen in place of the Enter Name screen. You will not be at the text entry screen. This screen can only be confirmed visually.

At the Enter Name screen, you enter the name for this contact. This name can be used for searching through the Contacts directory. For a sighted person, it is helpful to enter an alphabetical name, such as “Home,” which they can later find by viewing the Contacts directory on the screen or by entering the letter “H.” However, alphabetical text entry is cumbersome and does not make the Contacts directory accessible. We recommend you enter a one- or two-digit number at the Enter Name screen. This may allow you to find the contact in the Contacts directory later by pressing the number keys. For example, if you enter your home phone number as a contact and you enter the number 2 as the contact name, you can search for it in the Contacts directory by listing contacts and pressing the 2 key. Once you have saved the contact named “2”, you can assign the number 2 as the speed dial location for this contact.

Important: In order to search in the way described here, the Fast Find option must be activated. A reference to activating Fast Find is given at the end of this procedure.

To enter a number as a contact name at the Enter Name screen, press and hold a number key for approximately two seconds – one second before and one second after the DTMF tone. For example, to enter 12, you would first press and hold 1, hear the DTMF tone, hold for another second and then you would press and hold 2, hear the DTMF tone, and hold for another second.

Note 1: If you accidentally released a number without holding it down, a letter will be entered instead. To erase it, press the Clear key once.

Note 2: If your Key Beep Length setting is set to Long (instead of Normal), the DTMF tones in the previous procedure will not stop until the keys are released.

5. When you have entered the numeric contact name, press OK twice to save the contact. If you choose not to enter a contact name, press OK three times.

6. Press down once, then press OK to select the phone number you entered.

7. Press down once, then press OK to select Speed Dial.

8. Press and hold the key corresponding to the speed dial location you want. For example, to assign 2 as the location, press and hold 2 until one second after the DTMF tone. To assign 12 as the speed dial location, press 1, then 2 in quick succession. You do not need to hold down the second key. Note: If you wait too long after pressing the first digit of a two-digit location, the phone will forget the first digit. For example, if you wait too long after pressing 1 before you press 2, you will go to location 2 instead of location 12.

9. Press OK and wait three seconds to assign the speed dial location to the contact.

10. If you want to classify this contact as business or personal in case you want to set the phone to ring differently for business or personal calls, proceed to the next step. If you do not want to classify the contact, briefly press the End key to return to standby mode.

11. To classify the contact, press up once and press OK to select Options.

12. Press down three times, then press OK to select Classify Contact.

13. At this point, you have four options:
Personal
Business
Neither
Info

To select Personal, press OK.
To select Business, press right once, then press OK.
To select Neither, press right twice, then press OK.

The fourth option simply presents an explanation of the options on the screen.

14. Briefly press the End key to return to standby mode.

Note: Directions for activating Fast Find are in section 5.6.1 Activate Fast Find.

6.2.2 Speed Dial a Number

Once a number has been entered in the Contacts directory and a speed dial location has been assigned to it, you can speed dial the number.

1. From the home screen, dial the 1-digit or 2-digit speed dial location.

2. Press the Send key.

We recommend you use the 1-Touch Dialing feature to save a step when speed dialing.

6.2.3 Troubleshooting Speed Dialing

If nothing happens when you dial a speed dial number, the phone may have lost service or you dialed a speed dialing number that had not been assigned. (If this is the case, a message will appear on the screen. There is no auditory signal.)

6.2.4 Use 1-Touch Dialing to Speed Dial a Number

To dial a phone number, press and hold the assigned speed dialing location for the phone number. If it is a two-digit number, press the first number briefly, then press and hold the second number for one second. For example, if the speed dialing number is 3, press and hold the 3 key, but if the speed dialing number is 13, press the 1 key briefly, then press and hold the 3 key. The phone will dial the contact and you should hear the ringing or busy signal in a few seconds.

6.2.5 Troubleshooting 1-Touch Dialing

If you have enabled 1-Touch Dialing on your phone, and if nothing happens when you press and hold a speed dial number, the phone may have lost service or you dialed a speed dialing number that had not been assigned. (If this is the case, a message will appear on the screen. There is no audible signal.)

1. Briefly press the End key to make sure the phone is in standby mode.

2. Press the exact numeric name or speed dial location of the contact. Do not press the Send key or hold down the last character of the speed dial location.

If you enter 8 and you have more than one contact beginning with 8, for example, 8 and 81 and 82, all contacts will be found, with 8 first.

Instructions for activating Fast Find are in section 5.6.1 Activate Fast Find.

9.1 Menu Options Described

(T) Contacts

Use your phone’s Contacts directory like a set of phone index cards to store information about a person or company.

The Contacts directory stores 200 or more phone numbers. On each card you can store a name and up to six phone numbers, email addresses, or URLs, as well as street addresses and notes about the person or company. For accessibility, we suggest you store one phone number on each contact.

10 Troubleshooting

10.1 If the Phone Is Not Making Sound When You Press the Keys

The keypad is silent in the following four situations:

1. When the phone is in silent mode, all ringers and key beeps are silenced. To rule out the possibility of silent mode, press right and hold for a second. The keys should now beep.

2. When the phone is turned off. To turn on the phone, press and hold the End key (second row, second key) for two or three seconds, until the phone beeps. If the phone does not beep, the battery may be drained.

3. When the key beeps are set to be silent. To set key beeps to make sounds, briefly press the End key to go to standby mode. Press OK. Press right three times, then press OK again. Press down once, then press OK. Press down seven times, then press OK. Press right to increase the volume. (You will hear sound as you increase the volume.) Then press OK once.

12 Appendix

12.1 FCC/IC Notice for the Kyocera 5135 Phone

This device complies with part 15 of the FCC rules. Operation is subject to the following two conditions: (1) This device may not cause harmful interference, and (2) this device must accept any interference received, including interference that may cause undesired operation.

To comply with FCC radiation exposure requirements, use of this device for body-worn operational configurations is limited to accessories tested and approved by Kyocera Wireless Corp. Other accessories used with this device for body-worn operations must not contain any metallic components and must provide at least 26.7 millimeters separation distance including the antenna and the user’s body. Other accessories that have not been tested for body-worn SAR may not comply with FCC radiation exposure limits and should be avoided.

THIS MODEL PHONE MEETS THE GOVERNMENT’S REQUIREMENTS FOR EXPOSURE TO RADIO WAVES.

Your wireless phone is a radio transmitter and receiver. It is designed and manufactured not to exceed the emission limits for exposure to radio frequency (RF) energy set by the Federal Communications Commission of the U.S. Government. These limits are part of comprehensive guidelines and establish permitted levels of RF energy for the general population. The guidelines are based on standards that were developed by independent scientific organizations through periodic and thorough evaluation of scientific studies. The standards include a substantial safety margin designed to assure the safety of all persons, regardless of age and health.

The exposure standard for wireless mobile phones employs a unit of measurement known as the Specific Absorption Rate, or SAR. The SAR limit set by the FCC is 1.6W/kg.* Tests for SAR are conducted using standard operating positions specified by the FCC with the phone transmitting at its highest certified power level in all tested frequency bands. Although the SAR is determined at the highest certified power level, the actual SAR level of the phone while operating can be well below the maximum value. This is because the phone is designed to operate at multiple power levels so as to use only the power required to reach the network. In general, the closer you are to a wireless base station antenna, the lower the power output.

Before a phone model is available for sale to the public, it must be tested and certified to the FCC that it does not exceed the limit established by the government-adopted requirement for safe exposure. The tests are performed in positions and locations (e.g., at the ear and worn on the body) as required by the FCC for each model. The highest SAR value for this model phone when tested for use at the ear is 1.31 W/kg and when worn on the body, as described in this user guide, is 0.648 W/kg. (Body-worn measurements differ among phone models, depending upon available accessories and FCC requirements). While there may be differences between the SAR levels of various phones and at various positions, they all meet the government requirement for safe exposure.

The FCC has granted an Equipment Authorization for this model phone with all reported SAR levels evaluated as in compliance with the FCC RF emission guidelines. SAR information on this model phone is on file with the FCC and can be found under the Display Grant section of http://www.fcc.gov/oet/fccid after searching on FCC ID OVFKWC-5135.

Additional information on Specific Absorption Rates (SAR) can be found on the Cellular Telecommunications Industry Association (CTIA) web-site at http://www.wow-com.com

* In the United States and Canada, the SAR limit for mobile phones used by the public is 1.6 watts/kg (W/ kg) averaged over one gram of tissue. The standard incorporates a substantial margin of safety to give additional protection for the public and to account for any variations in measurements.

12.2 Caution

The user is cautioned that changes or modifications not expressly approved by the party responsible for compliance could void the warranty and user’s authority to operate the equipment.

12.3 Safety

Use the following guidelines to optimize the performance and life of your phone, antenna, and battery.

12.3.1 Vehicle Air Bags

DO NOT place installed or portable phone equipment or other objects over the air bag or in the air bag deployment area of a vehicle. If equipment is not properly installed, the driver and passengers risk serious injury.

12.3.2 Potentially Unsafe Areas

Posted facilities: Turn your phone off in any facility when posted notices require you to do so.

Aircraft: FCC regulations prohibit using your phone on a plane that is in the air. Turn your phone off before boarding aircraft.

Vehicles: RF signals may affect improperly installed or inadequately shielded electronic systems in motor vehicles. Check with the manufacturer of the device to determine if it is adequately shielded from external RF energy. Your physician may be able to help you obtain this information.

Blasting areas: Turn off your phone where blasting is in progress. Observe restrictions, and follow any regulations or rules.

Potentially explosive atmospheres: Turn off your phone when you are in any area with a potentially explosive atmosphere. Obey all instructions. Sparks in such areas could cause an explosion or fire, resulting in bodily injury or death.

Areas with a potentially explosive atmosphere are often, but not always, marked with signs. They include fueling areas such as gas stations; below deck on boats; transfer or storage facilities for fuel or chemicals; vehicles using liquefied petroleum gas, such as propane or butane; areas where the air contains chemicals or particles such as grain, dust, or metal powders; and any other area where you would normally be advised to turn off your vehicle engine.

12.3.3 Use With Care

Use only in normal position (to ear). Don’t bend the antenna or touch it unnecessarily. Pull out the antenna when on a call and push it in when the phone is not in use. Avoid dropping, hitting, bending, or sitting on the phone.

12.3.4 Keep Phone Dry

If the phone gets wet, turn the power off immediately and return it to the dealer for service.

12.4 Resetting the Phone

If the screen seems frozen and the keypad does not respond to keypresses, reset the phone by completing these steps):
1. Remove the battery door.
2. Remove and replace the battery.
If the problem persists, return the phone to the dealer for service.

12.5 Accessories

Use only Kyocera-approved accessories with Kyocera phones. Use of any unauthorized accessories may be dangerous and will invalidate the phone warranty if said accessories cause damage or a defect to the phone.

To shop online for a Hands-free Car Kit and other phone accessories, visit www.kyocera-wireless.com/store. To order by phone, call 800 349 4188 in the U.S.A. only or 858 882 1410.

12.6 Radio Frequency (RF) Energy

Your telephone is a radio transmitter and receiver. When it is on, it receives and sends out RF energy. Your service provider’s network controls the power of the RF signal. This power level can range from 0.006 to 0.6 watts.

In August 1996, the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) adopted RF exposure guidelines with safety levels for hand-held wireless phones. These guidelines are consistent with the safety standards previously set by both U.S. and international standards bodies in the following three reports:

ANSI C95.1 (American National Standards Institute, 1992)
NCRP Report 86 (National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements, 1986).
ICNIRP (International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection, 1996).

Your phone complies with the standards set by these reports and the FCC guidelines.
