GarageBand 10 Accessibility Overview Draft 4

This overview is created for general use of GarageBand 10.

This guide/ overview is just to get you started in a program that is multi-faceted. You will find that the helps sections will help you to fill in the blanks.

You will find a list of keyboard commands below this overview.

Recording,

Commands for beginning a new project can be found in the list of commands below.
Follow the directions when you use this command to determine the type of project you would like to create.

Commands for creating a new track in your project are in the list of commands below.
Follow the directions to determine the type of track you wish to create.

Editing

After you have created your new recording you may want to do some editing, delete, copy, or, work with a region of a track in some way, do the following.

Move to the track’s contents area and choose the track where you want to do your editing. Now interact with the track. You will be on the region. Now you can do a number of things. For example, you might want to take out a part of one of the tracks you have recorded. While you are on the track and the region you want to edit, play the song, or, using the control bar group find the place in the song you wish to edit.
Now press command-t to split the region at the playhead. You will find that there is another region with a slightly different number.
Now by using the edit menu, or, the keyboard commands you can cut, copy, or perform a number of actions.
***You may find that when you press one of the edit keyboard commands you will hear no feedback from Voiceover, however when you check your work you may find that action has been performed. If you are uncomfortable with this, try using the edit menu.

Mixing

Pan and level controls are found in track headers for each track.

Some pointers to select effects with the Smart Controls, by Tuscia Falconer.

In GB Preferences under Audio/midi you need to check Audio Units.
It can be useful to have speech verbosity set toHigh.
Now back in the main window, check Smart Controls, check Inspector.
Check Controls. This will give you the control over adding effects and Also with this button selected, in the Smart controls group, you will find the recording level slider.
By checking EQ you will get EQ parameters.
Select the track you wish to add audio units to.
Go to Smart Controls and interact with it, scroll to Audio units and then to the first button, currently unnamed. Select the button by pressing VO space bar and shift.
This will give a menu with two items, no effect and Audio Units which has sub menus, scroll to the effect you want to apply.
You will be prompted to keep or bypass the existing GarageBand effects, by default Reverb and echo.
You will next be in a panel with the instrument name, a button and Manual. By pressing the button with VO spacebar you can turn the effect off and on.
Press Exit and you will return to the Smart Controls menu and now the first button is named to the effect you chose. You can select effects with each of the four buttons.
Select an effect with VO keys-shift-spacebar and you will enter parameters to edit the effect or choose a preset. Select with VO spacebar and leave with exit.

If you have selected the EQ button the Smart Controls will present you with many parameters to select presets or in the scroll area modify a setting.

If you have selected Master, your selections will be for the Master Track.Selecting Output will give you Master effects, EQ will give you Master EQ.

Patches
A patch is a pre defined group of audio settings, plugins, EQ and so on that you can use in your project. When you have the library checked you can either interact with the browser to find a list of patches you mite want for example for voice, VO keys-right arrow to another list and be amazed at all of the choices of sounds. Or you can use the search box to find what you are looking for. There are several sounds for nearly everything you mite want which you can add to your track.

Navigation

Control bar group, located in the control bar tool bar

When you interact with the control bar group you will find the following,,
1. playhead position group,
Interacting with this group will allow
You to move through the track by bar, beat, tick and so on just interact with the slider you wish to change.
2. The tempo slider. Interact with it to change the tempo of the song.
3. A pop up button with which you may change the key of the song.
4. Signature, number of beats slider, interact with the slider.
5. Signature note value pop up button.

Quantize by Tuscia Falconer
To select the Quantize type for a track.
You will need to be on a software instrument track.
Interact with the Instrument track so you are selecting a region of notes.
Press Cmd A or ‘Select All’ in the menu
Now select Editors instead of Smart Controls.
Select Piano Roll instead of Score.
Arrow right and interact with ‘Piano Roll’ group.
Arrow right until you get the ‘Instrument content’ group, interact with it and again ‘select All’. These are the notes and midi data you are going to Quantize.
Stop interacting with the Instrument content.
Arrow right until you come to Quantize and VO space on the setting to bring up a very comprehensive menu.
Select your choice and press the Q button.
By pressing the Q button you perform the quantize, you may want to change the quantize choice and press Q again to perform the new setting.
Once the setting has been made for a track you can add more recordings and simply press the Q key and the quantize function will be executed.

Loops

Open and close loops with o.
After using the search box to select a range of loops, you may play a selection with, VO keys-shift-spacebar.

Copy a loop in to your project, do the following.
You can move loops just as you did in GB6.
Select the place in the song where you want the loop to be placed by using the control bar, located in the control bar tool bar, or by stopping the song in the place where you want the loop to be placed.
Go to the loop browser,
select your loop and interact with it,
press command-c to copy and then command-v to paste and it will be in your project in a new track, just where you want it..

Moving a selection, and moving or stretching a loop in the time line.
To make sure that the track you want to work with is selected, in track headers make sure that the solo check box is check on the track you wish to work with.

Interact with tracks content group, now interact with tracks background.

If you are on a loop, or region, you can use, VO keys-command accent which will allow you to move a loop in the time line with the right and left arrow keys.
To stretch the loop, interact with the region and with VO keys right arrow, move to the loop handle, then press VO keys-command-accent and use VO keys-Right arrow to stretch the loop in small steps.
Using Vokeys-command-shift-accent, you will inter the region resize options menu where you will find a list of a few areas you mite want to resize . Use VO keys-right and left arrow keys to move, or resize.

Commands,
***Moving through a project can be done in a couple of ways.
You can use the control bar group located in the control bar tool bar as outlined above, or, you can press “period” to move forward, or, “comma” to rewind but these commands do not give you Voiceover feedback, however holding either one of these keys down will give you fast forward, or, fast rewind respectively.
To get Voiceover feedback when you move through the project, use the forward and rewind buttons, located in the control bar tool bar, with VO keys space bar and Voiceover will tell you that you have moved forward, or backward by 1 bar.
