1.2 Conventions Used in this Guide

In this guide, the phrases “press right,” “press left”, “press up,” and “press down” refer to pressing the Navigation key right, left, up, or down. For example, “Press up three times then press OK” means press the top edge of the Navigation key three times, then press the OK key once.

2 Quick Start

The Kyocera 2235 phone has a standard phone keypad plus five function keys for turning the phone on and off, making and ending calls, and navigating through menus.

On the top right edge of the phone is the antenna, which sits within the antenna housing. On the top of the housing sits a flat, button-shaped cap. This is the top of the antenna. Pull this out to full extension when you make or answer a call.

Top row, left to right: OK key, Clear key

The OK key is a small, oval placed at a 45-degree angle. It makes a high-pitched beep when pressed.

The Clear key is a small, oval placed at a 45-degree angle located to the right of the OK key. It beeps in the same pitch as the Navigation key.

Second row, left to right: Send key, Navigation key, and End key

The Send key is located on the far-left edge of the phone, is oval shaped and is slightly larger than the OK key. It emits a short high tone each time you press it.

The Navigation key is the large key in the center of the second row. The key has a pathway that is similar to a plus sign and has an indent in the center. It functions in much the same way as the arrow keys on a computer keyboard for moving up, down, left, and right through the phone’s menus. To move up, press the top edge of the Navigation key. To press left, press the left edge of the key, and so on. Each time you press the Navigation key in any direction, it beeps in the same pitch.

The End key is located on the far right edge of the phone. Both the Send and End keys beep in the same pitch, higher than the Navigation and Clear keys.

The next four rows of keys comprise a standard phone keypad. These number keys make conventional DTMF tones. There are two small bumps or nibs on the 5 key.

There are two jacks on the bottom edge of the phone: a rectangular one on the left and a small, round one on the right. The small, round one is the jack for the travel charger included with the phone. (The rectangular jack is for the data cable, sold separately.) There is also a small, round jack on the left edge of the phone, near the phone screen. This is for the headset (sold separately).

2.1 Turn on the Phone

Press the End key. When you first press the key, you may hear a clicking sound. Several seconds later, a short high beep sounds when the phone powers on. In approximately five more seconds, a double beep sounds, the phone enters standby mode and is ready to use. The keys will make DTMF tones when pressed.

Note: If your phone did not make DTMF tones, the keyguard may be on. Press the number keys 1 2 3. If a DTMF tone sounded when you pressed 3, then you just unlocked the keypad and the phone is now in the mode it was in when keyguard was activated. (Note: Sometimes the DTMF tone for number key 3 sounds twice in rapid succession when you unlock the keypad.)

2.2 Turn off the Phone

Press and hold the End key for several seconds. When you first press the key, you will hear a beep. Do not release the key until a short, high-pitched beep sounds.

2.3 Make a Call

Your phone must be turned on before you can use it. When the phone is off, incoming calls go to voicemail.

1. Briefly press the End key to make sure the phone is in standby mode (idle state).

2. Enter the phone number on the keypad.

3. Press the Send key.

2.4 Answer a Call

When the phone rings, press the Send key to answer. (

2.5 End a Call

Briefly press the End key. It will beep once.

Note: Make sure you press the End key briefly. The phone will turn off if you press and hold down the End key.

2.6 Avoid Making Accidental Phone Calls

If you carry your phone in a pocket or purse, activate keyguard to prevent pressing keys accidentally. To activate keyguard, press and hold the Navigation key left. After the standard Navigation key beep, another beep sounds immediately followed by a higher beep confirming the phone is locked. Now that the phone is locked, you cannot use it for anything except answering a call. The keys will not make a sound when you press them.

To unlock the keypad, dial the number keys 1 2 3 in sequence (third row of keypad). When you press 3, the DTMF tone sounds. The keypad is unlocked and the phone is in the mode it was in when you activated keyguard. To make sure the phone is in standby mode, briefly press the End key. (Note: Sometimes the DTMF tone for the 3 key sounds twice in rapid succession when you unlock the keypad.)

2.7 Set Up Voicemail

Before you can record voicemail messages, you must set up a password and record a personal greeting. When you have set up your voicemail, all unanswered calls to your phone are automatically transferred to voicemail, even if your phone is in use or turned off.

To set up voicemail, follow these steps:
1. Briefly press the End key to make sure the phone is in standby mode.

2. Press and hold the 1 key for around two seconds. The number 1 should speed dial your service provider’s voicemail access number.

3. Follow the system prompts to create a password and record a greeting.

Note: If you are having trouble accessing your voicemail, contact your service provider for assistance.

2.8 Check Voicemail Messages

1. Briefly press the End key to make sure the phone is in standby mode.

2. Press and hold the 1 key. This key speed dials your service provider’s voicemail access number.

3. Follow the system prompts.

To set your phone to alert you when you have voicemail messages, refer to Section 5.4.2.

Note: If you are having trouble checking your voicemail messages, contact your service provider for assistance.

2.9 Accessible Settings

We recommend that your phone be set to the following three settings for accessibility.

1. Set the Main Menu View to the Large Icons setting. Instructions are in Section 3.6.2 Changing the Menu Display Setting.

2. Make sure Silence All mode is turned OFF. Instructions are in Section 5.1.7 Vibrate and Silence

3. Set a shortcut to the Ringer Volume setting. Instructions are in Section 5.1.2 Set a Shortcut to the Ringer Volume Option.

3 Getting to Know your Phone

This section describes the features and use of your phone in detail.

3.1 Phone Features and Specifications

Trimode: Your Kyocera 2235 operates in three modes, to keep you connected virtually anywhere. The modes are CDMA digital service at 800 and 1900 megahertz, and analog service at 800 megahertz. CDMA stands for Code Division Multiple Access, the standard for digital communications developed by QUALCOMM Incorporated.

Features: Phone features include vibration alert; audible alerts for missed calls, voicemail, roaming; 25 standard ringer tones and songs including separate ringers for business and personal callers; alarm clock; calculator; stopwatch; countdown timer; and two-way short messaging service for sending and receiving text messages.

3.2 Safe Operating Instructions

Read these cautions before you use the phone.

If you have a pacemaker, keep the phone at least 6 inches (15 centimeters) away from your chest. If your phone is too close to a pacemaker, its radio frequency (RF) energy may interfere with the pacemaker. If you have any reason to suspect a problem, turn off your phone immediately. See the Appendix of this document for more information about RF energy.

Only use Kyocera-approved accessories with Kyocera phones. Use of any unauthorized accessories may be dangerous and will invalidate the phone warranty if the accessories cause damage to the phone. To order accessories, contact your service provider or contact the Accessory Store by phone at 800 349 4188 or 858 882 1410, or online at www.kyocera-wireless.com.

3.3 Icons on the Screen

For your information, we will describe the icons that appear on the phone’s five-line screen (from left to right).

The D (Digital Mode) icon means the phone is operating in CDMA digital mode. There is no sound associated with this icon.

The Signal Strength icon (an antenna with up to four vertical lines) indicates the current signal strength. The more vertical lines that appear, the stronger the signal. When the Signal Strength icon is on the screen, you can make and receive calls. There is no sound associated with this icon.

The No Signal icon (a phone with a line through it) means that your phone is not receiving a signal from the system. You cannot make or receive calls. Wait a little longer or move to a different location. You can set an audible alert to notify you when you move in or out of the service area. Refer to 5.4.3, Roaming Alert.

The On Call icon (a phone) means that a call is in progress.

The Bell icon indicates that the alarm clock has been set.

The Silence icon (a bell with a line through it) indicates that the phone ringer has been silenced and the phone will vibrate or light up instead of ringing.

The R (Roaming) icon means the phone is outside of its home service area. You can set an alert that tells the phone to beep if you move in or out of your service area. Refer to 5.4.3, Roaming Alert. When the alert is turned on, a two-tone beep sounds each time you enter or exit your home area. The beep when you exit goes from a higher tone to a lower tone, and the beep when you reenter goes from the lower tone to the higher tone.

The Envelope icon means that you have received a text message, voicemail, or page. When this icon first appears, your phone will beep four times. If you have the message alert turned on, you will also hear a single reminder beep every five minutes. To set the message alert, refer to Section 5.4.2.

The Padlock icon means that your phone is operating with enhanced CDMA voice privacy (if available from your service provider).

The Battery Charge icon (a battery with diagonal black bars) shows how much power remains in the battery. The more black bars there are, the greater the charge. When your battery charge is very low, the phone beeps, the icon on screen blinks, and a text message on the screen warns you about the low battery level.

The Up Arrow icon is a direction to press the Navigation key up.

The Down Arrow icon is a direction to press the Navigation key down.

3.4 Physical Features of your Phone

Hold the phone with the keypad facing you and notice the following features.

3.4.1 Antenna

The antenna is on the top right edge of the phone. Always extend the antenna while making or receiving a call for the best reception.

3.4.2 Headset Jack

The jack for a headset is located on the left edge of the phone, near the top.

3.4.3 Charging Jacks

The jacks for the data cable and travel charger are located on the bottom edge of the phone. The rectangular jack on the left is the jack for the data cable (which is sold separately). The small, round jack on the right is the jack for the travel charger (which is included with the phone).

3.4.4 Earpiece

The earpiece is on the front of the phone above the screen. It consists of three small holes in the faceplate.

3.4.5 Keypad

Below the screen is the keypad, which has six rows of keys, as described horizontally. There are two keys in the top row, three in the second row, and three in each of the four remaining rows. The use of these keys is described in Section 3.4.6.

3.4.6 Keys

Description of keys by location

Keys are described from left to right in each row. The section is a quick reference to the keys by name.

The function keys are in the first and second rows. The first row is located directly below the screen. It contains a small oval key on the left, and second small oval key on the right. These are the OK key and the Clear key.

OK key - Press OK to select menu items and options that have been highlighted. It beeps when you press it.

Clear key – Press the Clear key to back up through menu options one option at a time. Press and hold the Clear key to return to standby mode. It will beep once if you backed up once. It will beep twice if you backed up to standby mode.

Also use the Clear key like a backspace key on a computer: Press it once to erase the last key you pressed or press and hold it to erase all the characters you just entered or dialed. When you press and hold it, the phone will make one low beep, then one high beep. After the second beep, all characters have been erased.

The second row contains three keys. To the far-left edge of the phone is the Send key, in the center is the Navigation key (it’s the largest key, has an indent in the center, and the pathway is similar to a plus sign). To the far right edge of the phone is the End key.

Send key - The Send key emits a short high tone each time you press it. Press the Send key to start a call, answer a call, or twice to redial the last number you dialed.

Navigation key – Press the Navigation key up, down, left, and right to move forward and backward through most menus and to increase or decrease volume settings. It emits a short, lower tone when you press it up, down, left, and right. If it emits a repeating, high-pitched beep, you have reached the end of a list or menu and cannot move further in the direction you have pressed.

End key - The End key is used to end a call, to exit a menu or option and return to standby mode, or to turn the phone on and off. This key also emits a short high tone.

Press the End key to turn the phone on or off. When the phone powers on, a short high beep sounds or the phone vibrates, depending on the ringer setting. Release the key after the beep or vibration. The phone is ready to use.

Press and hold the End key to turn the phone off. A short beep sounds when you first press the key. Hold the key down several seconds until you hear a high beep indicating that the phone has powered off.

Press briefly on the End key to end a call or exit the current menu or option and return to standby mode.

Rows 3 through 6 comprise oval keys in the standard numeric telephone layout. On the 5 key, on the right and left, there are small bumps or “nibs.” The tones associated with these keys are similar to a regular telephone keypad. If the keys don’t make sounds when you press them, the phone power may be off, the keypad may be locked, the Silence All sounds setting may be on, or the Key Beeps setting may be turned off.

The star key, the first key in the sixth row, functions as the Shift key. It is used to change letter case from lower case to capitals while entering text in a text message or contact name.

The pound key, the third key in the sixth row, functions as the Space key. This key is used to add a space while entering text.

Press the 0 key to dial a zero or to reach the operator. The 0 key is also used to cycle through word choices that appear on the screen while entering text using the T9 Text Input (rapid text entry) mode.

3.5 Battery

Your phone comes with a standard external lithium ion (LiIon) battery. The battery is partially charged when you receive the phone.

3.5.1 Battery Specifications

Battery types: Standard LiIon battery (included) and extended LiIon battery (not included)

CDMA talk time: Up to 3.25 hours with standard LiIon battery.

CDMA standby time: Up to 6 days with standard LiIon battery.

Times will vary based on user settings, feature use and network configuration. Battery drain is greater when the phone is roaming in analog mode.

Before using your phone, fully charge the battery.

You can safely recharge the battery at any time, even if it has a partial charge.

3.5.2 Insert the Battery

1. Check to see if the back cover of the phone is on. To remove the cover, hold the phone face-down in your hand. On the back of the phone, near the top edge, is an indentation and a latch to the back cover. Using your thumb, press the latch down. Pull the back cover away from the phone.

2. Hold the phone with the cavity facing you.

3. Hold the battery between your thumb and forefinger. Find the two tabs at the edge of the battery. The flat edge of these tabs should be facing you, while the opposite, hollow edge of the tabs should be facing the phone cavity. Slide the top end of the battery into the cavity and lay the tabs of the battery into the cavity.

3. To place the back cover on the phone, locate the two tabs at the bottom of the cover. Hold the cover over the phone cavity. With the tabs toward the bottom edge of the phone, slide the tabs, fitting into the bottom cavity.

4. Press the top of the cover until the cover snaps closed.

3.5.3 Remove the Battery

1. Press and hold the End key for a few seconds to power off the phone. You will hear an immediate beep. When you hear a second, higher beep, the phone is off.

2. To remove the battery, remove the back cover of the phone. To remove the cover, hold the phone face-down in your hand. On the back of the phone, near the top edge, is an indentation and a latch. Press the latch down and pull the back cover away from the phone.

3. The battery is approximately half the length of the phone and it sits in the phone cavity. Use your thumb and forefinger to grasp the top portion of the battery, towards the top of the phone, and lift it out of the cavity.

3.5.4 Charge the Battery

Connect the adapter charger that came with your phone to the small round jack located on the bottom edge of the phone to the right of the rectangular jack. Press until it snaps into place. Then connect the adapter plug to a wall outlet.

If you are using a charging accessory that has a serial connector (a plug with a row of pins), insert the connector into the rectangular jack on the bottom edge of the phone to the left of the small round jack. (Such accessories are not provided with the phone but may be available through Kyocera Wireless Corp. or your service provider.)

To charge the battery more quickly, turn off the phone while charging it.

3.5.5 Battery Power Levels

The battery must have at least a partial charge before you can make or receive calls, even if it’s connected to the travel charger.

A battery icon on the phone screen indicates the battery charge. When the battery is fully charged, the icon is filled with black bars and the message “Charging is complete” appears on the screen. No sound is associated with this message.

When the battery is very low, the icon blinks on the screen, and a text message appears on the screen warning about the low battery level.

When the battery is drained, the phone beeps several times and shuts off.

You can extend battery life by turning off backlighting. Backlighting causes the screen and perimeter of the keys to light up when a key is pressed.

3.5.6 Turning Off Backlighting to Save Battery Charge

To turn off backlighting, take these steps.

1. Briefly press the End key to make sure the phone is in standby mode.

2. Press OK once. The phone beeps once.

3. Press the Navigation key right three times, then press OK once to select the Settings menu.

4. Press the Navigation key down three times, then press OK to select the Display menu.

5. Press OK to select the Backlighting menu.

6. Press OK again to select the first item in the list, “Disabled.”

7. Briefly press the End key once to return to standby mode.

3.5.7 Battery Care

Follow these guidelines to improve battery performance.

- Do not disassemble, puncture, or short-circuit the battery.
- Keep the metal contacts of the battery clean.
- If you have not used a battery for more than a month, recharge it before using your phone.
- Avoid extreme temperatures, direct sunlight, and high humidity.
- Never dispose of any battery in or near a fire. It could explode.

3.6 Navigating Through Menus

Important: The way your display settings are set up affects which direction you must press the Navigation key to select menu items. We suggest you read this section before proceeding through the manual.

Your Kyocera 2235 phone has an extensive menu structure. Most of these menus must be accessed using the Navigation key. The top-level menus are the main sections of the phone software. They are called Contacts, Messages, Recent Calls, Settings, Tools & Games, Phone Info, and Web Browser. Most top-level menus contain submenus, some of which contain more lists and menus. For a list of all of the phone’s menu options, refer to Section 9, Menus.

3.6.1 Top-level Menu Navigation

To access the top-level menus, briefly press the End key to make sure you are in standby mode, then press OK once. The top-level menus are now active; when you press the Navigation key up, down, left, or right, you will be moving through menu options. Which direction you need to press to access menus depends on the menu display setting of your phone.

Your phone has three menu display settings: Large Icons, Small Icons, and List Menus. These settings determine how you navigate between the top-level menus and how they are presented on the screen. (Procedures in this book are written assuming your phone is set to the Large Icons or Small Icons setting.) These settings are described here.

Large Icons and Small Icons Settings

This section describes how to navigate through the phone’s menus when your phone is set to the Large Icons setting or the Small Icons setting. The steps for navigating through menus are the same for both the Large Icons setting and the Small Icons setting; however, we recommend the Large Icons setting because the risk for error is smaller.

Using either Icons setting, you access menus in much the same way as you do in a Microsoft Windows application: Press the Navigation key to the right or left to access the top-level menus; then press down or up to access submenus.

Using either of these settings, from standby mode, you press OK once to select Menu. The key beeps. You are then at the first option in the list of top-level menus. This menu option is called Contacts.

To move to the next top-level menu (Messages), press the Navigation key right briefly once. The phone will beep once. Repeat to go to the next menu. If you press and hold instead of pressing briefly, the phone will beep once, but you will move rapidly through multiple menus without hearing subsequent beeps.

To return to the previous menu, press the Navigation key left briefly once. Repeat to back up to the menu before that one.

As you press the Navigation key left or right, the top-level menus loop continuously. That is, when you reach the end of the list, the phone starts again at the first menu. To find the beginning of the list of top-level menus, briefly press the End key once to exit. You will hear a high-pitched beep. Then Press OK to select Menu. It will beep once. You are now at the first top-level menu (Contacts) again.

List Menus Setting:

This section describes how to navigate through menus when your phone is set to the List Menus setting. (Note: Directions in this user’s guide are written for phones set to the large Icons or Small Icons setting, not the List Menus setting.)

Using the List Menus setting, you press OK once to select Menu. The phone beeps once. You are then at the first item in the list of top-level menus (Contacts).

To move to the next menu, press the bottom of the Navigation key down briefly once. The phone will beep once. Repeat to go to the next menu.

To back up to the previous menu, press the Navigation key up briefly once. Repeat to back up to the menu before that one, and so on.

If you press and hold instead of pressing briefly, the phone will beep once, but you will move rapidly through multiple menus without hearing subsequent beeps. In List Menus setting, the list will not loop. That is, you will stop moving at the end of the list. In top-level menus, there is no sound to indicate you have reached the end of the list. In submenus, the phone makes a very high-pitched beep, which repeats until you release the key. To return to the beginning of the list, press and hold the Navigation key up in the same way.

To find the beginning of the list of top-level menus when you are in List Menus, briefly press the End key to exit, then press OK to select Menu. You are now at the first top-level menu (Contacts).

3.6.2 Changing the Menu Display Setting

Most phones are set to either the Large Icons or Small Icons setting when you receive them. However, if your phone is set to List Menus, take these steps to change it to the Small Icons setting.

1. Briefly press the End key to make sure the phone is in standby mode.

2. Press OK once to select Menu.

3. Press the Navigation key down four times to move to the Settings menu.

4. Press OK to select the Settings menu. A vertical list of options appears on the screen.

5. Press down three times, then press OK to select Display.

4. Press the 4 key, then press OK to select Main Menu View.

8. Press down once, then press OK to select Large Icons.

9. Press the End key once to return to standby mode.

3.7 Submenu Navigation

After you have selected a top-level menu such as Contacts or Settings, a vertical list of options appears on the screen. The first item is highlighted.

To move to the next item in the list, press down briefly once. The phone usually beeps once. If you press down and hold the key, the phone will beep once, but you will move through multiple items until you release the key.

To back up through the list, press the Navigation key up.

When you reach the end or beginning of the list, the phone will make a high-pitched beep. If you are holding down the Navigation key to move through the list quickly, the phone will beep repeatedly when you reach the end or beginning of the list until you release the Navigation key.

3.8 Identifying the Mode the Phone is In

3.8.1 Standby Mode

When the phone is turned on but is not being used, it is usually in standby mode (its idle state). In this mode, the keys work and make sounds. From standby mode, you can dial a phone number, save a number in the phone book, or access a number that has been saved in the phone book. Briefly press the End key at any time to return to standby mode. Important: If you press the End key while on a call, you will end the call.

If you are unsure whether your phone is in standby mode, briefly press the End key once. If the phone beeps when you press the key, you are in standby mode.

3.8.2 Power-Save Mode

When the phone is turned on, it will switch to power-save mode if it fails to locate a signal after several attempts. The words “Power Save Mode” and an icon of a phone with a line through it appear on the screen.

When the phone is in power-save mode, you cannot make or receive calls. When you press any key, the phone beeps and returns to standby mode. We recommend you briefly press the End key to make sure the phone is in standby mode.

3.8.3 Keyguard

Keyguard locks the phone keypad so that you don’t accidentally press keys when you are not using the phone. When keyguard is on, the phone will make no sound when any key is pressed. You can answer an incoming call, but the keyguard remains on after the call ends.

If you are unsure whether the phone is turned off or keyguard is on, press the number keys 1 2 3 in sequence. If a DTMF tone sounds only for the number 3, you have just turned off keyguard and you have returned to the mode it was in when keyguard was activated. If the phone still makes no sound after you press 1 2 3, it is turned off. (Note: Sometimes the DTMF tone for the number 3 key sounds twice in rapid succession when you unlock the keypad. This does not change anything.)

3.8.4 Set keyguard to be Automatically Activated

You can set your phone to go into keyguard mode automatically after it has been in standby mode and inactive for 30 seconds, 1 minute, or 5 minutes. Automatic keyguard helps you ensure that you have not pressed a key accidentally.

Note: When you have automatic keyguard activated, the keypad may lock when you are in the middle of a task. For example, if you have entered three digits of a phone number and you hesitate to look up the remaining four digits, the keypad may lock. When you return to enter the four digits, the keypad makes no sound. Simply press 1 2 3, the DTMF tone will sound, the keypad will unlock, and you will return to the mode you were in: The first three digits are still there, and you can then enter the remaining four digits to call the number. Likewise, if you have entered the menu structure when the keypad locks, you can press 1 2 3 to unlock it and you will be in the same part of the menus that you were in when it locked. (Note: Sometimes the DTMF tone for the number 3 key sounds twice in rapid succession when you unlock the keypad.)

To activate or deactivate automatic keyguard, take the following steps:

1. Briefly press the End key once to make sure the phone is in standby mode.

2. Press OK once.

3. Press the Navigation key to the right three times, then press OK once to select the Settings menu.

4. Press down once, then press OK to select the Keyguard menu.

In this menu, you have five options: Guard now, 30-second auto-guard, 1-minute auto-guard, 5-minute auto-guard, and Auto-guard off.
Guard now: This option simply activates the keyguard one time. It’s the same as pressing and holding the Navigation key to the left.
30 second, 1 minute, and 5 minute auto-guard: These options set the phone to lock the keypad any time it has been idle in standby mode for the designated amount of time.
Auto-guard off: This option returns the phone to the default setting, with no automatic keyguard. With the phone on this setting, you can still manually set the keyguard when you need it using the Navigation key.

5. Select an option as follows. (Note: If you select an option as directed here and then change your mind and want to select another option, you must return to step 1 to start over.)
Guard now: Press OK once.
30-second auto-guard: Press down once, then press OK once.
1-minute auto-guard: Press down twice, then press OK once.
5-minute auto-guard: Press down three times, then press OK once.
Auto-guard off: Press down four times, then press OK once.

6. Briefly press the End key once to return to standby mode.

4 Making and Answering Calls

Your phone must be turned on before you can use it. When the phone is off, incoming calls go to voicemail. This section describes how to make and answer calls, how to make calls after dialing 911, how to mute the phone, and use special calling features from your service provider, such as call waiting and three-way calling. Note: For information on entering speed dial numbers, refer to Section 6.1 Saving A New Contact.
4.1.1 Make a Call

1. Briefly press the End key to make sure the phone is in standby mode (idle state).

4.1.4 Answer a Call Waiting

Your Kyocera 2235 supports call waiting if your service provider has activated it. Contact your service provider for details.

With the call waiting feature, when you are on a call and another call comes in, you hear two beeps. To ignore the call and send the caller to voice mail, ignore the beeps. To answer the call, take these steps.

1. Press the Send key. This switches you to the incoming call. The previous caller is placed on hold.

2. Press the Send key again to change from one caller to the other. If you press the End key, both calls are disconnected.

4.1.5 Calling 911

You can call an emergency number such as 911 even if your phone is locked or your access is restricted. When 911 is invoked in certain areas of digital coverage, your position is relayed to emergency services. In analog networks, the call will go through but location services are not possible.

4.1.6 Making and Receiving Calls after Calling 911

Any time you make a 911 call, your phone goes into emergency mode. This enables the emergency service exclusive access to your phone so they can call you back if necessary. To make or receive regular calls after dialing 911, you must exit emergency mode as follows.

When you have completed the 911 call, press the OK key twice. The phone returns to standby mode and you are ready to make and receive calls.

4.1.7 Mute a Call

During a call, if you want to set the phone so that the other party does not hear your voice, Press OK.

To turn off the mute feature, press OK again.

4.1.8 Use Three-Way Calling

Three-way calling allows three parties to participate in the same phone conversation. Your Kyocera 2235 supports three-way calling if your service provider has activated it. Contact your service provider for details.

1. To set up a three-way call, dial the first party and press the Send key.

2. When the first party answers the phone, press the Send key to put them on hold.

3. Dial the second number and press the Send key.

4. When the second party answers, press the Send key again.

You should hear both parties. If one of the other two parties hangs up, you and the remaining party stay connected. If you hang up, all parties are disconnected.

4.2 Redialing Phone Numbers

4.2.1 Redial the Last Number you Dialed

1. Briefly press the End key to make sure your phone is in standby mode.

2. Press the Send key twice to redial.

4.2.2 Redial a Number from the Recent Calls List

Your phone creates a recent calls list of the last fifteen incoming and outgoing calls in the order they occurred. It includes numbers you may have dialed but hung up before anyone answered, and numbers of callers who made a connection with your phone but did not leave a voice mail message.

The most recent call is listed first. You can select and call any of the numbers in this list, with the exception of calls from phone numbers that have caller ID blocking from the phone company. Calls from blocked phone numbers will be included in the list, but the phone does not recognize the numbers, so they cannot be called back.

To call a number in the Recent Calls list:

1. Briefly press the End key to make sure your phone is in standby mode.

2. Press right twice, then press OK to select the Recent Calls menu. The phone number of the most recent incoming or outgoing call is highlighted. To locate a less recent number, press down, once for each number. (For example, to highlight the third phone number on the list, press down twice.) When you reach the end of the list, the phone emits a short, high beep.

3. To call the highlighted number, press the Send key.

4.3 Speed Dialing and 1-Touch Dialing

Once a phone number has been entered in the Contacts directory and a speed dial location has been assigned to it, you can speed dial the number. Directions for saving a contact and adding a speed dial location are in Section 6.1 Saving A New Contact.

1. Briefly press the End key to make sure your phone is in standby mode.

2. Dial the 1-digit or 2-digit speed dial location.

3. Press the Send key.

We recommend you use the 1-Touch Dialing feature to save a step when speed dialing.

4.3.1 Use 1-Touch Dialing to Speed Dial a Number

Once a phone number has been entered in the Contacts directory, a speed dial location has been assigned to it, and the 1-Touch Dialing option has been activated on your phone, you can use this feature.

>From the home screen, press and hold the assigned speed dialing location for the phone number. If it is a two-digit number, press the first digit briefly, then press and hold the second digit for one second. For example, if the speed dialing number is 3, press and hold the 3 key, but if the speed dialing number is 13, press the 1 key briefly, then press and hold the 3 key. The phone will dial the contact and you should hear the ringing or busy signal in a few seconds.

4.3.2 Troubleshooting Speed Dialing and 1-Touch Dialing

If nothing happens when you dial a speed dialing location and press Send, or when you press and hold a speed dial number after 1-Touch Dialing has been enabled on your phone, the phone may have lost service or you may have dialed a speed dialing location that had not been assigned. (If this is the case, a message will appear on the screen. There is no audible signal.)

In addition, you can set the phone to make audible alerts to indicate when you have missed a call, when you have voicemail messages, and when you are roaming or moving into an area where a call may be lost. This section describes how to set and use these features.

6 Phone Book: Storing Contacts

The phone’s Contacts directory stores up to 200 contacts. It also stores up to 40 voice tags to use for voice dialing. In order to set up a speed dial location for a phone number, you must save the phone number in the Contacts directory. While you are saving the phone number, you can classify it as business or personal if you would like to set the phone to ring differently to identify calls from business or personal contacts.

Note: While it is possible to save more than one phone number, in addition to a pager number or email address in a single contact, we recommend that you save each phone number or pager number as a single contact to make searching for the phone numbers easier. This guide gives directions for saving contacts in the most accessible way: One phone number per contact, with a numeric name and a classification of business or personal, and a speed dial location that matches the contact name.

6.1 Saving A New Contact

1. Briefly press the End key to make sure the phone is in standby mode.

2. Using the numeric keypad, enter the phone number you want to save, including the area code. You do not need to enter a number 1 before the area code, but be sure to include the area code so that the phone number will be dialed correctly when you are roaming.

Note: If you want to erase the last character you entered, press the Clear key once per character. If you want to clear all the numbers you entered, briefly press the End key.

3. Press OK to select the Save New option. There will be one beep.

Note: If the number you have entered has already been saved in your Contacts directory, the message “Number is saved already. Save again?” appears on the screen. You will not be at the text entry screen. This screen can only be confirmed visually.

You are now at the Enter Name screen. Here you enter the name for this contact. This name can be used for searching through the Contacts directory.
For a sighted person, it is helpful to enter an alphabetical name, such as “Home,” which they can later find by viewing the Contacts directory on the screen or by entering the letter “H.” However, alphabetical text entry is cumbersome and does not make the Contacts directory accessible. We recommend you enter a one- or two-digit number at the Enter Name screen. This allows you to find the contact in the Contacts directory later by pressing the number keys. For example, if you enter your home phone number as a contact and you enter the number 2 as the contact name, you can search for it in the Contacts directory pressing the 2 key. Once you have saved the contact named “2”, you can assign the number 2 as the speed dial location for this contact, and then simply press and hold 2 to dial the number.

Important: In order to search in the way described here, the Fast Find option must be activated. See Section 5.6.1.

4. To enter a number as a contact name at the Enter Name screen, press and hold a number key for approximately two seconds – one second before and one second after the DTMF tone. For example, to enter 12, you would first press and hold 1, hear the DTMF tone, hold for another second and then you would press and hold 2, hear the DTMF tone, and hold for another second.

Note 1: If you accidentally release a number without holding it down, a letter will be entered instead. To erase it, press the Clear key once (first row, second key).

Note 2: If your Key Beep Length setting is set to Long (instead of Normal), the DTMF tones in the previous procedure will not stop until the keys are released.

5. When you have entered the numeric contact name, press OK to save the contact.

6. Press down once, then press OK to select the phone number you entered.

7. Press down twice, then press OK to select Speed Dialing.

8. Press and hold the key corresponding to the speed dial location you want. For example, to assign 2 as the location, press and hold 2 until one second after the phone beeps. To assign 12 as the speed dial location, press 1, then 2 in quick succession. You do not need to hold down the second key.
Note: If you wait too long after pressing the first digit of a two-digit location, the phone will forget the first digit. For example, if you wait too long after pressing 1 before you press 2, you will go to location 2 instead of location 12.

9. Press OK to assign the speed dial location to the contact.

10. If you want to classify this contact as business or personal to set the phone to ring differently for business or personal calls, proceed to the next step. If you do not want to classify the contact, briefly press the End key to return to standby mode.

11. To classify the contact, press up once and press OK to select Options.

5. Press right twice, then press OK to select the Save New option.
The Enter Name screen appears. Note: If the number you have selected has already been saved in your Contacts directory, the Save New option will not be available and you will have selected the View Contact option. If the caller’s number has been blocked or restricted by the phone company, the phone will be at the Call Time/Date screen and pressing right will have no effect. These screens can only be confirmed visually.

5. To finish saving this contact, proceed to step 4 of the Section, 6.1 Saving A New Contact.

6.2.1 Save a Speed Dialing Location

To save a speed dialing location, you must also save the phone number as a contact in the Contacts directory. Directions for saving a contact and adding a speed dial location are in 6.1 Saving A New Contact.

Once a number has been entered in the Contacts directory and a speed dial location has been assigned to it, you can speed dial the number.

1. From the home screen, dial the 1-digit or 2-digit speed dial location.

2. Press the Send key.

We recommend you use the 1-Touch Dialing feature to save a step when speed dialing.

If nothing happens when you dial a speed dial number, the phone may have lost service or you dialed a speed dialing number that had not been assigned. If this is the case, a message will appear on the screen. There is no auditory signal.

6.2.3 Use 1-Touch Dialing to Speed Dial a Number

To dial a phone number, press and hold the assigned speed dialing location for the phone number. If it is a two-digit number, press the first number briefly, then press and hold the second number for one second. For example, if the speed dialing number is 3, press and hold the 3 key, but if the speed dialing number is 13, press the 1 key briefly, then press and hold the 3 key. The phone will dial the contact and you should hear the ringing or busy signal in a few seconds.

If you have enabled 1-Touch Dialing on your phone, and nothing happens when you press and hold a speed dial number, the phone may have lost service or you dialed a speed dialing number that had not been assigned. If this is the case, a message appears on the screen. There is no audible signal.

The keypad is silent in the following four situations:

1. When the phone is in silent mode, all ringers and key beeps are silenced. To rule out the possibility of silent mode, press right and hold for a second. The keys should now beep.

2. When the keypad is locked, the keys do not work. Try unlocking the keypad: Press number keys 1 2 3. If only the number 3 beeps, you just unlocked the keypad. All keys should now make sounds when you press them.

3. When the phone is turned off. To turn on the phone, press and hold the End key (second row, third key) for two or three seconds, until the phone beeps. If the phone does not beep, the battery may be drained.

4. When the key beeps are set to be silent. To set key beeps to make sounds, briefly press the End key to go to standby mode. Press OK. Press right three times, then press OK again. Press down twice, then press OK. Press the number 8, then press OK. Press right to increase the volume. (You will hear sound as you increase the volume.) Then press OK once. 12 Appendix

12.1 FCC/IC Notice for the Kyocera 2235 Phone

This device complies with part 15 of the FCC rules. Operation is subject to the following two conditions: (1) This device may not cause harmful interference, and (2) this device must accept any interference received, including interference that may cause undesired operation.

To comply with FCC radiation exposure requirements, use of this device for body-worn operational configurations is limited to accessories tested and approved by Kyocera Wireless Corp. Other accessories used with this device for body-worn operations must not contain any metallic components and must provide at least 26.7 millimeters separation distance including the antenna and the user’s body. Other accessories that have not been tested for body-worn SAR may not comply with FCC radiation exposure limits and should be avoided.

THIS MODEL PHONE MEETS THE GOVERNMENT’S REQUIREMENTS FOR EXPOSURE TO RADIO WAVES.

Your wireless phone is a radio transmitter and receiver. It is designed and manufactured not to exceed the emission limits for exposure to radio frequency (RF) energy set by the Federal Communications Commission of the U.S. Government. These limits are part of comprehensive guidelines and establish permitted levels of RF energy for the general population. The guidelines are based on standards that were developed by independent scientific organizations through periodic and thorough evaluation of scientific studies. The standards include a substantial safety margin designed to assure the safety of all persons, regardless of age and health.

The exposure standard for wireless mobile phones employs a unit of measurement known as the Specific Absorption Rate, or SAR. The SAR limit set by the FCC is 1.6W/kg.* Tests for SAR are conducted using standard operating positions specified by the FCC with the phone transmitting at its highest certified power level in all tested frequency bands. Although the SAR is determined at the highest certified power level, the actual SAR level of the phone while operating can be well below the maximum value. This is because the phone is designed to operate at multiple power levels so as to use only the power required to reach the network. In general, the closer you are to a wireless base station antenna, the lower the power output.

Before a phone model is available for sale to the public, it must be tested and certified to the FCC that it does not exceed the limit established by the government-adopted requirement for safe exposure. The tests are performed in positions and locations (e.g., at the ear and worn on the body) as required by the FCC for each model. The highest SAR value for this model phone when tested for use at the ear is 1.40 W/kg and when worn on the body, as described in this user guide, is 0.657 W/kg. (Body-worn measurements differ among phone models, depending upon available accessories and FCC requirements). While there may be differences between the SAR levels of various phones and at various positions, they all meet the government requirement for safe exposure.

The FCC has granted an Equipment Authorization for this model phone with all reported SAR levels evaluated as in compliance with the FCC RF emission guidelines. SAR information on this model phone is on file with the FCC and can be found under the Display Grant section of http://www.fcc.gov/oet/fccid after searching on FCC ID OVFKWC-2235.

Additional information on Specific Absorption Rates (SAR) can be found on the Cellular Telecommunications Industry Association (CTIA) web-site at http://www.wow-com.com

* In the United States and Canada, the SAR limit for mobile phones used by the public is 1.6 watts/kg (W/ kg) averaged over one gram of tissue. The standard incorporates a substantial margin of safety to give additional protection for the public and to account for any variations in measurements.

12.2 Caution

The user is cautioned that changes or modifications not expressly approved by the party responsible for compliance could void the warranty and user’s authority to operate the equipment.

12.3 Safety

Use the following guidelines to optimize the performance and life of your phone, antenna, and battery.

12.3.1 Vehicle Air Bags

DO NOT place installed or portable phone equipment or other objects over the air bag or in the air bag deployment area of a vehicle. If equipment is not properly installed, the driver and passengers risk serious injury.

12.3.2 Potentially Unsafe Areas

Posted facilities: Turn your phone off in any facility when posted notices require you to do so.

Aircraft: FCC regulations prohibit using your phone on a plane that is in the air. Turn your phone off before boarding aircraft.

Vehicles: RF signals may affect improperly installed or inadequately shielded electronic systems in motor vehicles. Check with the manufacturer of the device to determine if it is adequately shielded from external RF energy. Your physician may be able to help you obtain this information.

Blasting areas: Turn off your phone where blasting is in progress. Observe restrictions, and follow any regulations or rules.

Potentially explosive atmospheres: Turn off your phone when you are in any area with a potentially explosive atmosphere. Obey all instructions. Sparks in such areas could cause an explosion or fire, resulting in bodily injury or death.

Areas with a potentially explosive atmosphere are often, but not always, marked with signs. They include fueling areas such as gas stations; below deck on boats; transfer or storage facilities for fuel or chemicals; vehicles using liquefied petroleum gas, such as propane or butane; areas where the air contains chemicals or particles such as grain, dust, or metal powders; and any other area where you would normally be advised to turn off your vehicle engine.

12.3.3 Use With Care

Use only in normal position (to ear). Don’t bend the antenna or touch it unnecessarily. Pull out the antenna when on a call and push it in when the phone is not in use. Avoid dropping, hitting, bending, or sitting on the phone.

12.3.4 Keep Phone Dry

If the phone gets wet, turn the power off immediately and return it to the dealer for service.

12.4 Resetting the Phone

If the screen seems frozen and the keypad does not respond to key presses, reset the phone by completing these steps):
1. Remove the battery door.
2. Remove and replace the battery.
If the problem persists, return the phone to the dealer for service.

12.5 Accessories

Use only Kyocera-approved accessories with Kyocera phones. Use of any unauthorized accessories may be dangerous and will invalidate the phone warranty if said accessories cause damage or a defect to the phone.

12.6 Radio Frequency (RF) Energy

Your telephone is a radio transmitter and receiver. When it is on, it receives and sends out RF energy. Your service provider’s network controls the power of the RF signal. This power level can range from 0.006 to 0.6 watts.

In August 1996, the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) adopted RF exposure guidelines with safety levels for hand-held wireless phones. These guidelines are consistent with the safety standards previously set by both U.S. and international standards bodies in the following three reports:

ANSI C95.1 (American National Standards Institute, 1992)
NCRP Report 86 (National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements, 1986).
ICNIRP (International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection, 1996).

Your phone complies with the standards set by these reports and the FCC guidelines.
